Nautosteer® Steering System

Based on a long experience and advanced technology, Raytheon Anschütz offers customized and economical solutions for manual steering control. Raytheon Anschütz Nautosteer is suitable for modern ships of any size.

Raytheon Anschütz Nautosteer® steering control is a flexible system, which allows different configurations, e.g. Dual Follow-Up (FU), Dual Non Follow-Up and Dual FU / Dual NFU steering control. Each system is configured individually for each ship to achieve maximum flexibility and performance. This means customized and economical solutions corresponding to the special requirements of steering gears, steering capacities and behaviour as well as ship owner's and operator's  preferences with respect to quantity and location of controls, operator units and indicators.

Configuration

All systems are available for ships with single and double rudder (with individual and synchronous steering). Rudder limit systems or steering failure systems are offered for additional safety.

  • Dual Follow-Up (FU) Steering System
In case of Dual Follow-Up (FU) steering control two follow-up amplifiers are required. This ensures a separated control path for each valve/pump of the steering gear. The advantage of FU steering control is that the rudder angle is shown directly at the handwheel and that it works as a closed loop system meaning that a rudder drift is compensated by the system automatically. The required rudder angle is set at the handwheel. The follow-up amplifier compares the actual rudder information from the feedback unit with the set rudder information from the handwheel and operates the valves of the steering gear until the required rudder angle is reached.
  • Dual Non-Follow-Up (NFU) Steering System
A Non-Follow-Up (NFU) steering control operates the two valves/pumps of the steering gear directly. No feedback information or follow-up amplifiers are required. NFU steering control is the most direct and thus the safest steering control mode. It is not as comfortable to operate as follow-up steering because the actual rudder angle has to be read off from a rudder angle indicator and it does not compensate for rudder drift. The required rudder angle is obtained by moving the non-follow-up tiller to port or starboard direction as long as the rudder angle is reached. The actual rudder position has to be checked at the rudder angle indicator.
  • Dual FU/Dual NFU Steering System
The Dual FU / Dual NFU steering control system combines the advantages of both follow-up and non-follow-up steering. The steering mode is selected at the steering mode control switch. Both systems operate the two valves/pumps of the steering gear.
